Certainly, this arms-length distance gives the Society freedom to act which might be hampered by a closer administrative relationship with the government. Therefore you, as Board members, have a huge responsibility. You cannot help but be aware of the case of our daughter, Emma Gallant McCarthy who we have claimed and continue to claim was illegally apprehended by your Society. The Society hired the offices of Khattar and Khattar to threaten us, and former Frank Sampson made statements to the press defending the Society's position in this matter. Nonetheless, our daughter was taken from us. She was also taken from her extended family. Our attempts to get her back through the court process have been thwarted by stonewalling and trickery. Last week, she turned five years old. As members of the Board of Directors, it is your responsibility to scrutinize and approve the actions of the Director and other table officers. We will assume that you have heard the former Director's side of things. You should not be satisfied with hearing only one side. Your job as Board Members requires that you lend your name and reputation to the actions of the society. The Society engaged in criminal deception of the courts with regard to our daughter Emma. And we would also point out to you that any rumours about us being prosecuted for releasing her name are unfounded. Emma is not a subject of court proceedings. The full details of our case are available on the Internet at www.injusticebusters.com We would also be more than happy to provide you with documentation and answer any questions you might have. We are not going to let this matter go. We are trusting that with a new government in Nova Scotia, we will be successful in getting this matter opened up. In fact, we will be sending a copy of this letter to the appropriate government officials. This letter is a courtesy to allow you to familiarize yourselves with the full facts in this case. We hope that you will be curious enough to check our allegations and take the appropriate action. Sincerely, Bernard McCarthy Lisa McCarthy c.c. Premiere John Hamm 1700 Granville Street P.O. Bernard McCarthy & Lisa McCarthy 599 Upper Leitches Creek Road North Sydney, NS B2A 1B1 Tel:(902)794-1764 Fax:(902)794-1764 November 4, 1999 Hon. John Hamm, Premier Office of the Premier 7th Floor, One Government Place 1645 Granville Street P.O. Box 726 Halifax, NS B3J 2T3 Dear Premier Hamm: While you were still in opposition last winter, we wrote to you telling you about the abduction of our child, Emma, by the Cape Breton Children's Aid Society. Your office wrote a positive reply which is enclosed. Now that you are Premier, we hope that you can really help us. We have been more than three years without Emma, who turned five last week. We have sent a letter dated November 2, 1999, to members of the Board of Directors of the Society who have also had some changes in administration. This letter was also sent to you. Presently, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police are investigating into this matter. However, in the last 18 months as we have been really pushing this case, and getting occasional flurries of publicity, we find ourselves on a roller coaster of hope and despair. The full details of the case can be found on the Internet at www.injusticebusters.com and other pages which are linked to it. The bottom line is this: There are many irregularities in this case. We have legally established that members of the Children's Aid Society have behaved improperly and criminally. We do not know where Emma is. Will you help us to help Emma? Sincerely, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard L. McCarthy These reasonable letters received no meaningful response.
