Klassen demands meeting
with premier
Gerry
Klein, The StarPhoenix, May 16. 2003
REGINA -- The front lawn of
the provincial legislative building has a new tenant.
Richard Klassen and his supporters
have set up camp across from Saskatchewan's seat of government,
demanding either Premier Lorne Calvert or Justice Minister Eric
Cline come out and talk to him about a 1991 case that saw him
and 12 others charged in a bizarre sex abuse case.
Klassen has been lobbying for
years to have the government admit the charges against the group
were unfounded.
In September, a civil case
he launched demanding compensation for the damage caused by the
allegations is expected to go to court. Two months have been
set aside to deal with it.
A group of 13 people, including
Richard and Kari Klassen, were accused of sexual abuse and performing
satanic rituals, including making three children under their
care eat feces, drink blood and urine, and forcing them to have
sex with bats and dogs. Subsequently, it was shown that there
was no satanic cult, no ritualistic abuse and the supposed victims
admitted it was actually one of them -- the older brother --
who abused his twin sisters while they were in foster care.
But it is unlikely either Cline
or the premier will be going out to meet with the Klassens about
the case, said Deb McEwen, manager of strategic communications
for the Justice Department.
As attorney general, Cline
is responsible for the administration of justice in Saskatchewan
and can't be talking to parties involved in legal action, she
said.
"It would be entirely
inappropriate for him to meet with anybody involved in a lawsuit."
And it is important to note
that the government isn't a party to this action, she added.
Courts are independent of the
executive level of government to prevent interference in matters
before the court. This makes it very difficult for any politician
to be commenting on matters before the other branch of government,
McEwen said.
It's always the plaintiff's
choice where they want the matter resolved and these plaintiffs
chose to have the matter resolved in court.
In an interview, Klassen said
he is ready to stay on the grounds until the government meets
with him, admits its wrongdoing and compensates others hurt by
the mishandling of legal matters over the years.
